Swiss Free Trade Agreements

The seven agreements are closely linked by the obligation to enter into force simultaneously and, at the same time, six months after receipt of a notification of non-renewal or denunciation concerning one of them. [6] In addition to the EFTA Agreement and the 1972 Free Trade Agreement with the European Union (EU), Switzerland currently has a network of 31 free trade agreements (FTAs) with 41 partners. As a general rule, Switzerland concludes its free trade agreements with its partners, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, within the framework of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Nevertheless, Switzerland has the possibility of concluding free trade agreements outside the framework of EFTA, as has been the case for Japan and China. The purpose of preferential origin is to subject goods duty-free or a reduced duty on exports to a free-trade country. This is documented by a movement certificate or a country of origin declaration on invoice. Compliance with the non-preferential rules of the country of origin does not exempt goods from customs duties when they are imported into a third country – these rules of the country of origin apply only if the country of destination requires a certificate of origin for importation. This should not be confused with the issue of Swissness (“Made in Switzerland”) which is subject to another set of rules. The United States of America is Switzerland`s second largest export market. The United States and Switzerland established diplomatic relations after Switzerland became a single state in 1853. An agreement between the United States and Switzerland is the U.S. Swiss Joint Economic Commission, which covers several topics such as the fight against money laundering, the fight against terrorism, intellectual property rights and regulatory cooperation.

There is also an agreement in which the two countries assess areas where the other government could improve trade flows and investment. [11] In 2006, the United States and Switzerland signed three new agreements that strengthened economic cooperation between the two countries. The three new agreements are the Enhanced Framework for Political Cooperation, the Forum for Trade and Investment Cooperation and the Operational Agreement on Law Enforcement Cooperation in the Field of Counter-Terrorism[12]. In 2008, the United States and Switzerland signed a joint declaration on electronic commerce, which shows their mutual commitment to promoting electronic commerce. A free trade agreement between the United States and Switzerland was also on the agenda of the World Economic Forum 2019. And Swiss entrepreneur Michael Pieper, owner of Artemis Holding, wrote about the importance of the U.S.-Switzerland business relationship — and the important role of the American Swiss Foundation. In the February 2014 Swiss immigration vote, a popular initiative “against mass immigration”, the Swiss people narrowly approved measures to restrict the free movement of foreign nationals in Switzerland. . . .
